In 2021, the Government of Canada invested $63.8M in the Flood Hazard Identification and Mapping Program (FHIMP) to help Canadians better plan and prepare for future flood risks. The program was recently extended to 2028 through the National Adaptation Strategy and enhanced with an additional $164M investment.
Under the FHIMP, Natural Resources Canada, supported by Public Safety and Environment and Climate Change Canada, collaborates with provinces and territories to create, and disseminate flood hazard maps and information. In this presentation, Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) will provide an update on the results of the first stage of the FHIMP (2021-23) and the kickoff of the FHIMP expansion (2023-2028) which will see greater investments in every jurisdiction to complete flood mapping coverage. We will also highlight key scientific and technical innovations behind recent flood mapping efforts.
