[Webinar] Achieving Partial Denitrification with BioCord® Reactors while Mitigating Nitrous Oxide Emissions

July 14, 2025 @ 10:00 am - 10:45 am MDT

Nitrous oxide (N₂O) is a potent greenhouse gas produced as a byproduct in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) that incorporate biological nitrification and denitrification to achieve total nitrogen removal.

This session presents an overview of recent research focused on maximizing nitrite accumulation while mitigating N₂O emissions using BioCord® Reactors, a fixed-film, semi-passive biological treatment system that enables wastewater lagoons and mechanical treatment plants to improve year-round ammonia removal through nitrification and partial denitrification.

Partially funded by the Ontario Water Consortium’s Water Industry Growth Program, the study evaluated several operational conditions within the BioCord co-diffusion biofilm (PdN) process. It identified optimized parameters that significantly reduce N₂O emissions while increasing nitrite accumulation. These findings offer important insights into advancing nitrogen management strategies in wastewater treatment using simple, low-energy biofilm systems.
