New UN report “The Global Threat of Drying Lands: Regional and global aridity trends and future projections” released. Some highlights: + 77.6% of Earth’s land experienced drier conditions 1991-2020 compared to 1961-1990. + drylands cover 40.6% of all land on Earth (excluding Antarctica). + 7.6% of global crossed “aridity thresholds”. Most of those areas transitioned from humid landscapes to drylands, with dire implications for agriculture, ecosystems, and the people living there. + China is the country experiencing the largest total area shifting from non-drylands into drylands.
